Firm launches radiation protection pill

A Tennessee firm has launched an ingestible pill designed to protect against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation.

Premier Micronutrient of Nashville says its BioShield-Radiation pill is a nutritional supplement designed to address oxidative stress produced by ionizing radiation. The company said the pill is the outgrowth of work it has conducted with the U.S. Department of Defense and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Exposure to ionizing radiation produces excessive amounts of free radicals, known to cause inflammation, cellular damage, and mutations (occasionally leading to cancer), according to Premier. BioShield-Radiation contains dietary and endogenous antioxidants that have exhibited radiation protection capabilities, the firm said.

The pill is intended for patients undergoing medical or dental x-ray procedures, including CT, nuclear medicine, mammography, and fluoroscopy; frequent air travelers who are exposed to higher levels of cosmic radiation on high-altitude flights; and anyone regularly exposed to elevated levels of ionizing radiation, such as healthcare, aviation, and military and nuclear power plant personnel.
