Anatomy-based viewer speeds up image viewing for clinicians

In this scientific session, Swiss researchers will present their anatomy-based DICOM image viewer, which is designed to make the image viewing process quicker and more informative for clinicians.

Image viewers that are integrated into electronic health record (EHR) software are often too complicated and slow for daily use by clinicians in the ward, according to presenter Dr. Sebastian Bickelhaupt from University Hospital Zurich.

As an alternative, the Swiss team developed a software application that leverages a virtual model of human anatomy and Web access. It automatically recognizes anatomic structure on radiologic images and allocates the images to the regions of which they were taken. Images are also linked to a 3D model of human anatomy, Bickelhaupt said.

Because these features are browser-based, they even work on an iPad, he said. When compared with a commercially available DICOM viewer, the application was found to be faster and more usable.

"The use of the developed software eases the finding and demonstration of radiologic images as well as the process of simple clinical analyses, such as measuring dedicated structures on the images or comparing the time course of a radiological finding," Bickelhaupt said.
