CAD can detect coronary artery stenosis on MRA

In this Tuesday afternoon session, a Japanese team will present a computer-aided detection (CAD) scheme for finding coronary artery stenosis on whole-heart cardiac MR angiography (MRA).

Cardiac MRA is becoming common due to its ability to provide noninvasive visualization of coronary arteries without radiation. However, identifying significant coronary artery stenoses on whole-heart cardiac MRA is observer-dependent, said presenter Ryohei Nakayama, PhD, of Mie University School of Medicine.

As a result, the researchers developed a CAD scheme for this application, and they tested it on 30 patients who had significant stenoses with luminal diameter reduction of at least 50% in 88 vessels.

"Our CAD scheme achieved high sensitivities and low [false positives] for both 1.5-tesla MRA and 3-tesla MRA, and would have a great potential in assisting radiologists to identify coronary artery stenoses," Nakayama said.
