ASNC, SNMMI advise on cardiac sarcoidosis

The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) have released a report on the beneficial role FDG-PET/CT can play in cardiac sarcoidosis.

While the diagnostic performance of cardiac FDG-PET to identify cardiac sarcoidosis has been established, the authors noted that diagnostic accuracy can be "limited by lack of an adequate reference standard and by referral bias."

Therefore, one recommendation is to combine perfusion imaging and FDG imaging in cardiac FDG-PET studies to differentiate patterns of disease.

A multidisciplinary team of professionals with experience in radiology, clinical cardiology, cardiac electrophysiology, heart failure, and systemic sarcoidosis developed the consensus information and guidelines.
