NJ doctor acquitted in RayScam case

A New Jersey family physician was acquitted last week of commercial bribery charges in a case related to Operation RayScam, a state crackdown on a pay-for-patients scheme, according to an article by the Hudson County View.

A Hudson County judge dismissed second-degree bribery charges against Dr. John Fritz of Jersey City, essentially amounting to an acquittal in the case, according to the story. Fritz was first tried in the case last year in a trial that ended in a hung jury in October.

Fritz was arrested in 2015, along with several other physicians, and charged with referring 4,500 patients to a chain of imaging centers operated by Rehan Zuberi in exchange for about $500,000 in kickbacks. Zuberi pleaded guilty to charges related to the case and has testified against some of the other defendants.

Another prominent defendant in the Operation RayScam case, West New York Mayor Dr. Felix Roque, was also acquitted in a jury trial that concluded in December.
