ACR pushes Anthem to pay for breast tomo

The American College of Radiology (ACR) said it is urging healthcare payor Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield to pay for digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for its members.

Private-payor coverage of DBT remains a high priority for the ACR, the society said. To that end, it sent Anthem a letter requesting coverage of DBT, which it called an important screening tool.

Anthem insures patients in 14 states, and a positive coverage decision would benefit thousands of women, according to the ACR.

The organization has developed a resources page to assist members in approaching payors to ask for coverage of DBT. The ACR said it continues to work with payors nationally to educate them on the merits of breast tomosynthesis.
