In this Wednesday morning presentation, researchers from Portugal will discuss their project to optimize radiation dose for the most common pediatric plain radiography exams performed in their country. They also aimed to develop diagnostic reference levels to set optimal dose levels that can be used across the nation.

Deep-learning method creates super-resolution mammo images

In this poster presentation, Japanese researchers will present a deep-learning technique that enhances mammography results to create super-resolution images. A quantitative analysis showed that the method achieved significantly greater mean standard deviations for peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity than conventional techniques.

How to use a radiographic simulator to practice x-ray exams

Capturing flawless x-ray images demands precise timing and positioning. Researchers from Japan will demonstrate how to use a radiographic simulator to cultivate x-ray imaging skills without risking radiation exposure. The researchers will describe the logistics of using the simulator and also the optimal settings for the device in this digital education exhibit.

Breast ultrasound's cancer detection rate similar after DBT, mammo

Screening breast ultrasound's cancer detection rate in women with dense tissue is comparable after digital mammography versus after digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), according to a study conducted at Brown University. The findings could help practices better counsel women with dense tissue who present for additional imaging, wrote a team led by Dr. Elizabeth Dibble.

Chest x-ray algorithm shows why it made its diagnosis

A team from India will present a deep-learning algorithm that highlights the areas of the chest x-ray that led to the algorithm's diagnosis. Columbia Asia Radiology Group partnered with imaging AI software developer Qure.ai to evaluate a deep-learning algorithm for diagnosing chest radiographs. Importantly, the algorithm can generate explanatory "heat maps" that show radiologists the regions of the image that led to the diagnosis.

Iterative recon lowers CT radiation dose for calcium score

Researchers from Italy have discovered that iterative reconstruction can lower the CT radiation dose needed to determine coronary artery calcium scores. The researchers found that iterative reconstruction at 40% strength on CT scans allowed the half-dose protocol to provide information that was just as accurate as with the standard-dose protocol.

5-minute MRI protocol can be effective for knee scans

How does the diagnostic performance of a five-minute knee MRI protocol compare with that of a standard knee MRI protocol? Dr. Erin Alaia, a musculoskeletal radiologist at NYU Langone Health in New York City, will share the answer in this presentation.

Contrast mammography offers viable screening alternative

Contrast-enhanced digital mammography performs comparably to digital mammography and may be a useful screening alternative for women with an intermediate risk of breast cancer, according to this study being presented at RSNA 2017 on Sunday morning.

Dose monitoring program lowers average dose in Taiwan

Researchers from Taiwan will present a scientific poster describing their institution's success with implementing a radiation exposure monitoring system. They found that for adults, average radiation dose from various CT scans were on par with diagnostic reference levels, but for pediatric CT scans dose was as much as 3.62 times higher.
