Vero SBRT system installed in Texas

Image-guided therapy firm Brainlab and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have installed a Vero stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) system at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

The installation is the first in the Western Hemisphere, according to the companies.

The Vero system combines intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), and real-time tumor tracking. It also has integrated image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) as a work-in-progress in the U.S.

A key advantage of the system is its precision targeting ability. This enables radiation therapy to be given to patients for whom the risk of damage to nearby noncancerous tissue precludes further use of standard radiotherapy.

The new system joins seven linear accelerators and two stereotactic systems used to treat patients in the hospital's radiation oncology department.
