Elekta partners with Alliance for Cancer Care

Radiation oncology vendor Elekta has inked an agreement with the Alliance for Cancer Care, a cancer care network in Washington and Idaho.

Elekta said that its hardware and software will replace all other radiation therapy products and services at the alliance's seven radiation therapy facilities. The Alliance for Cancer Care encompasses Providence Health Care in Spokane, WA; Kootenai Health in Coeur d'Alene, ID; and Cancer Care Northwest in Washington and Idaho.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

PET/CT has significant advantages over conventional methods for lesion detection and staging in patients with natural killer/T-cell lymphoma.

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
