ASTRO releases updated rectal cancer treatment guide

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has published an updated clinical practice guideline for radiation therapy treatment for rectal cancer in the journal Practical Radiation Oncology.

The guideline describes recommendations to customize neoadjuvant and adjuvant radiation therapy for patients with moderately advanced rectal cancer based on their risk of recurrence (Pract Radiat Oncol, May-June 2016, Vol. 6:3, pp. 166-175).

The document was developed through the RAND/UCLA Appropriateness Method, for which members of an independent, multidisciplinary expert panel rate the appropriateness of different treatment approaches for different clinical scenarios based on a systematic review of published research, ASTRO said.
