Medtronic launches new endoscopic catheter

Device manufacturer Medtronic has released a new endoscopic ablation catheter for treating Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous condition that causes abnormal cell growth in the esophagus.

The company's Barrx 360 Express radiofrequency ablation balloon catheter allows surgeons to remove diseased tissue while minimizing injury to healthy esophageal tissue, reducing the risk of Barrett's esophagus with low-grade dysplasia by 90%, according to the firm.

Medtronic is currently launching the device in the U.S., with availability expected in the European Union, Australia, and New Zealand later this year.
