New GE division targets healthcare in emerging markets

GE Healthcare has created a new business unit designed to develop affordable new healthcare technologies for emerging markets around the world.

GE's Sustainable Healthcare Solutions (SHS) division will invest $300 million as part of an effort to develop a more affordable healthcare portfolio for customers. The unit will combine GE Healthcare's operations in India, South Asia, Africa, and Southeast Asia. SHS plans to work with governments, clinicians, private operators, and nongovernmental organizations to improve outcomes for health systems and patients.

GE noted that the market for low-cost medical equipment is estimated to be worth $8 billion a year, and it is growing significantly as countries invest more in healthcare. The company cited its Vscan Access handheld ultrasound scanner as an example of the type of low-cost technology that can improve access to care in emerging markets.

"Much of the world's population is without adequate healthcare, and innovations that can create better patient outcomes in a sustainable way are urgently needed," said John Flannery, president and CEO of GE Healthcare, in a statement.
