Varian joins Africa radiotherapy training program

Radiation therapy vendor Varian Medical Systems is teaming up with two South African universities to train caregivers in Africa on how to deliver conformal radiotherapy treatments for cancer patients.

The first Access to Care program will be provided in conjunction with Cape Peninsula University of Technology and the University of Cape Town's department of radiation oncology in Cape Town. The three-month course seeks to train and support radiation therapy departments in implementing and maintaining 3D conformal radiation therapy programs at their hospitals; many delegates will only have experience with older cobalt-based 2D treatments, according to the vendor.

The Access to Care program will offer two courses a year in South Africa, with each program being attended by four teams of radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and radiotherapy therapists from participating hospitals across the African continent, Varian said.
