Mevion installs S250 proton system in Fla.

Proton therapy developer Mevion Medical Systems has delivered its Mevion S250 proton accelerator to the University of Florida Health Cancer Center at Orlando Health.

The accelerator is the core component of the compact proton-beam therapy system being installed at Orlando Health, Mevion said. Construction of the proton center is expected to be completed next year.

The superconducting synchrocyclotron accelerator requires less space and has lower capital and operational costs than traditional systems, according to Mevion. Also, healthcare facilities can install one single-room proton therapy system or as many as needed to treat its patient population.

The first Mevion S250 was installed last December at the S. Lee Kling Center for Proton Therapy at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
