Societies team up to revise lumbar disk nomenclature

The North American Spine Society, the American Society of Spine Radiology, and the American Society of Neuroradiology have completed a revision of their recommendations for lumbar disk nomenclature.

An update to the original document produced in 2001, version 2.0 will be published in the November print and online editions of the Spine Journal (Fardon et al, Vol. 14:11, pp. 2525-2545). It will also appear online in Spine, and the American Journal of Neuroradiology will provide a link to the document, according to the societies.

Version 2.0 includes discussions of imaging diagnostic categories and subcategories, along with their implications for lumbar disk disease diagnosis. It also includes an extensive glossary and updated illustrations and references. Although it follows the original paper's categories, the revision also incorporates many changes to reflect current thinking on research and clinical care, according to the Spine Journal.
