CHOP launches fetal neuroprotection program

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) said it is setting up a comprehensive fetal neuroprotection program in which radiology will be a key player.

The program seeks to bring together leading experts in multiple fields to protect prenatal brain development in children with congenital heart defects, the hospital said. Based on emerging evidence of the interaction of heart disease and brain development in the fetus, the program will research innovative therapies to protect infants from brain injury as early as possible before birth.

Joining forces are the hospital's cardiac center, fetal heart program, neurology division, neonatology, and radiology, to name a few. The program will expand in future years to include fetuses with other birth defects such as congenital diaphragmatic hernia, the hospital said.
