Research academy urges RSNA attendees to contact Congress

The Academy of Radiology Research is conducting a virtual grassroots advocacy campaign during RSNA 2013 in Chicago.

Meeting attendees who visit the academy’s booth in McCormick Place’s Grand Concourse will be able to use a laptop, iPad, or their own mobile device to instantly send emails to their members of Congress in support of imaging research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The academy's website has all the information RSNA attendees need to contact their members of Congress. With three clicks, attendees can send emails to their two senators and one representative.

The academy is especially concerned about NIH funding -- earlier this year, the sequestration cuts reduced the NIH’s budget by 5.3%, which has already had the effect of lowering the NIH’s pay line. In 2014, that cut could increase to 7.2%, the academy said.

"The likelihood of gaining champions for imaging research increases significantly with dozens or even hundreds of letters from constituents in a particular department or state," the academy said.

RSNA attendees can help the NIH by visiting the academy’s booth and sending an email to their members of Congress. The emails take less than a minute to send but have a large impact on Capitol Hill, the academy added.
