Eckert & Ziegler to buy Biocompatibles

Eckert & Ziegler's medical device division plans to acquire the prostate cancer implants business of Biocompatibles for $5 million U.S. (3.75 million euros).

Biocompatibles is based in Oxford, CT, and generated sales of approximately $10 million (8 million euros) in 2012. The company is a division of Biocompatibles U.K. in Surrey, U.K.

According to Eckert & Ziegler, Biocompatibles voluntarily suspended manufacturing and delivery of its products in May 2013 following claims made by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of shortcomings in documenting its manufacturing processes.

With the pending acquisition, Eckert & Ziegler plans to correct the infractions and eventually market the implants in Europe. For the near future, Eckert & Ziegler intends to use Biocompatibles as a U.S. distribution platform for its tumor irradiation products.
