ASTRO announces abstract awards

The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) has selected 42 recipients for its 2013 annual meeting abstract awards.

The recipients will collectively receive $34,500 and be honored at ASTRO's annual meeting, which will be held from September 22 to 25 in Atlanta.

The honors include the Resident Clinical/Basic Science Research Abstract Award, the Resident Digital Poster Recognition Award, the Resident Poster Viewing Recognition Award, the Basic Science Abstract Award, the Annual Meeting Scientific Abstract/Travel Award, the International-U.S. Annual Meeting Scientific Abstract Award, and the Annual Meeting Nurse Abstract Award.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

PET/CT has significant advantages over conventional methods for lesion detection and staging in patients with natural killer/T-cell lymphoma.

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
