Dr. David Bluemke, PhD, is leaving his position at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to become the new editor of Radiology beginning in January 2018, according to the board of directors of the RSNA.
Bluemke will become the eighth editor of Radiology, replacing Dr. Herbert Kressel. RSNA announced in January 2016 that Kressel would be stepping down after serving as editor since 2007.
Bluemke is currently chief of radiology and imaging sciences at the NIH Clinical Center, and serves as senior investigator at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). In July, Bluemke will become a professor of radiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
"The journal Radiology has always been a window to the most important developments in radiological imaging," Bluemke told AuntMinnie.com. "The coming years will feature tremendous advances in medicine and radiology. Our journal will highlight the most important of these advances and help relate these advances to clinical practice."
To lead the field, Radiology needs to publish cutting-edge research articles on topics that are often highly specialized, Bluemke noted in a statement. The journal is set to begin offering increased editorial content to explain the significance of novel research findings. This will allow everyone to benefit from a better shared understanding of new research results and their impact on clinical practice.
Bluemke's main research has been in cardiovascular disease and its complications, according to the organization. His primary focus has been on atherosclerosis imaging and the use of traditional and molecular imaging modalities to evaluate the myocardium, using imaging modalities to detect, quantify, and monitor subclinical disease.
Bluemke said that a replacement for him at NIBIB has not yet been named.
"These things can often take a year or more," he said.
