Imaging vulnerable populations -- the geriatric patient

Tuesday, December 2 | 8:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m. | RC308 | Room S502AB
A special course on imaging vulnerable populations will begin at 8:30 a.m. and feature studies on several vulnerable patient groups for which CT plays an important role. Arrive by 9:30 a.m. to hear our highlighted presentation on geriatric patients, presented by Dr. Claudia Sadro (RC308D).

The first talk in the course will focus on obese patients (Martin Gumm, RC308A), followed by a discussion of transferred patients (Dr. Joel Gross, RC308B) and pediatric patients (Dr. Susan John, RC308C).

"The geriatric population is the most rapidly growing sector of the U.S. population, and emergency departments are seeing an increasing number of geriatric trauma patients," Sadro wrote in an email to AuntMinnie.com. "The most common cause of injury in geriatric patients is a fall, followed by motor vehicle crashes and auto/pedestrian crashes."

Radiology plays an important role in the workup of these patients, with CT in the "mainstay of imaging," according to the abstract. Also, there is less concern about the risk of cancer from ionizing radiation in older patients.

"Geriatric patients have different injury patterns than younger patients and are at increased risk of serious complications from minor injuries," she wrote. "They require early diagnosis and aggressive intervention to decrease mortality and to enable them to return to independent living."
