Launched in 2011 by RSNA with funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), Image Share is pursuing a patient-centric model for sharing images and reports. In the first phase of Image Share, patients can create an account to import their images and reports into a personal health record (PHR).
Mount Sinai, Image Share's first pilot site, has signed up about 190 patients since it began enrolling in August 2011. Other participating academic institutions include the University of California, San Francisco; the Mayo Clinic; and the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Mendelson, who serves as the chief clinical investigator for Image Share, said that in the second phase of the project, patients will be able to share their images without first uploading them to an Internet-based PHR, a capability that project investigators believe will assist in image sharing during trauma cases.
In the third phase of the trial, data will be deidentified and then made available for clinical trials.
