  • AECL, a Canadian government corporation, was building two new nuclear reactors -- known as the Maple project -- and had a contract to supply Nordion with radioisotopes when they were completed. However, design problems with the reactors delayed the project, and the Canadian government eventually canceled its plans to complete them.

The Maple reactors would have replaced the aging National Research Universal (NRU) reactor, which produces much of North America's supply of molybdenum-99, the precursor to technetium-99m, which is widely used in nuclear cardiology.

Nordion served the Canadian government with a notice of arbitration in 2008 regarding its decision, seeking to compel the government to complete the Maple facilities as well as pay Nordion monetary damages. Arbitration hearings were completed in May 2012.

The arbitration panel plans to render a decision in September, according to Nordion.
