Senate reaches 1-year deal on SGR

December 8, 2010 -- The leadership of the U.S. Senate has reached a tentative agreement to postpone reductions in Medicare physician payments for one year, with changes in the tax subsidy program that some consumers will use after 2014 to buy health insurance on the new exchanges.

The agreement would delay a 23% decrease in Medicare physician payments. The entire Senate was scheduled to review the agreement and possibly vote on the proposal before the end of this week.

On November 30, President Barack Obama signed legislation that halted until December 31, 2010, the 23% cut in physician payments under the sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula that had been scheduled to take effect on December 1.
