AAPM: CT technique helpful for joint replacement
August 1, 2012 -- A new CT reconstruction technique could produce significantly improved images of knee, spine, and hip implants and also lower radiation exposure, suggests preliminary research being presented on Wednesday at the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) annual meeting.

The method, called component reconstruction (KCR), was developed at Johns Hopkins University. It incorporates a computerized model of the implant's shape and material content into the 3D image reconstruction process, which produces higher image quality and possibly reduces radiation exposure, according to a statement released by the AAPM.
J. Webster Stayman, PhD, and colleagues are studying the method in clinical CT systems and are assessing its potential for routine use in hospitals, the association said.
