Report: DR to drive European market

Demand for digital radiography (DR) systems will increase significantly in European markets, while computed radiography (CR) units will reach saturation levels in many European sectors, according to a survey from German market research firm Data Information Intelligence (DII).

Although hospitals had withdrawn and postponed investments due to recent financial turbulence, the radiology market is now showing clear signs of recovery, according to DII. The Leipzig-based firm is projecting that demand for DR systems will increase by 11% to 33%, depending on the country.

Between 2006 and 2010, the annual growth rate for DR systems in Europe ranged between 10.3% and 27.8%, DII said. The company surveyed investment plans and installed equipment at hospitals in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.

DII found that the market penetration of DR systems in Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K. ranged between 25% and 38%. France lagged at 9% market penetration.

In other findings, DII noted that German hospitals are expected to purchase 115 DR systems over the next five years. Also, while more than 68% of German hospitals and more than 80% of British hospitals use CR, only about 24% of European hospitals utilize DR systems, the company said.
