Hitachi inks deal for proton facility in Japan

Hitachi of Tokyo has inked an agreement to collaborate with a Japanese university to develop a proton beam therapy (PBT) cancer treatment.

The company, parent to Hitachi Medical Systems, will work with Hokkaido University to develop the system under a grant from the Funding Program for World-Leading Innovative R&D on Science and Technology (FIRST Program), a national project sponsored by the Japanese government, Hitachi said.

Hokkaido University in Sapporo and Hitachi will combine real-time tumor-tracking technology and spot-scanning irradiation technology into a PBT system that will target respiratory tumors. The new facility will be constructed next to Hokkaido University Hospital; the project will begin in 2011 and be completed in March 2014. When the new facility is finished, it will be used as part of patient treatment at Hokkaido University Hospital, according to Hitachi.

PET/CT scans ‘crucial’ in patients with NK/T-cell lymphoma

A 50-year-old man with recently diagnosed nasal-type NK/T-cell lymphoma underwent an F-18 FDG-PET/CT scan (A–D) for initial staging. Maximum-intensity-projection image (A) shows hypermetabolic lesions in both ethmoid sinus (thin arrow), both cervical lymphatic chains (arrowhead), left upper lung (thick arrow), liver, and spleen. Transaxial images show an F-18 FDG-avid mass in both ethmoid sinus (B). The scan shows intense F-18 FDG radiotracer uptake in left upper lung and uptake in the liver and spleen (CT showed no lesions), suggesting malignancy (C–D). Finally, after the PET/CT scan was done, the patient’s staging was changed from II to IV.

FES-PET better than FDG-PET in breast cancer patients

In a head-to-head comparison, F-18 fluoroestradiol (FES)-PET/CT was better than standard FDG-PET/CT for the initial staging of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients.
