CCHIT launches EHR certification program

The Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT) announced that it will launch a new electronic health record (EHR) certification program for hospitals on December 15.

This EHR Alternative Certification for Hospitals program is designed to meet the needs of hospitals that have uncertified legacy software or customized commercial products, or those that have developed their own EHR systems. This certification offers a solution for hospitals that already have an EHR implemented using a variety of products that either are not individually certified or are a mix of certified and uncertified systems.

The Chicago-headquartered organization is one of three authorized testing agencies named by the U.S. Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) as an authorized testing and certification body (ONC-ATCB). Since September 3, 2010, it has certified 66 products offered by healthcare IT vendors.

Hospitals that receive EHR alternative certification will be one step closer to qualifying for financial incentives to adopt digital recordkeeping.

CCHIT will be conducting a webcast and teleconference on December 1 to announce details of the program.
