Merge grows revenues, names Surges CEO

With the help of its acquisition of PACS software developer Amicas earlier this year, healthcare IT and advanced visualization developer Merge Healthcare of Hartland, WI, achieved record revenues in the third quarter (end-September 30).

Revenues grew to $45.2 million in the third quarter, compared with $16.9 million in the third quarter of 2009. The company posted a net loss of $5 million in the quarter, compared with a net loss of $936,000 in the same quarter of 2009. This year's third-quarter net loss included acquisition-related and restructuring costs of $2.1 million, compared with $2.6 million in the third quarter of 2009.

Net sales for the nine-month period totaled $94.2 million, compared with $47.6 million in the same period of 2009. The company reported a net loss of $21.5 million for the nine-month period, compared with net income of $2.4 million in the same period of 2009.

Merge also named Jeffery Surges to the position of CEO. Surges most recently served as president of sales at Allscripts Healthcare Solutions of Chicago. He also served as president and CEO of Extended Care Information Network before the company was sold to Allscripts in December 2007.
