MDCT: Informatics can help evaluate CT image quality
June 18, 2013 -- Radiology has made great progress in the science of improving CT image quality and controlling radiation dose, according to Dr. Eliot Siegel. Imaging informatics can help put this science into clinical practice, he said on Monday at the International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT in Washington, DC.
MRI links abdominal aortic plaque with cardiovascular events
June 18, 2013 -- MRI measurements of the amount of plaque in the abdominal aorta and the thickness of its wall are associated with future cardiovascular events, such as a heart attack or stroke, according to a study published online June 18 in Radiology.
MDCT: Radiologists should control radiation dose discussion
June 17, 2013 -- WASHINGTON, DC - For the past 10 years, the potential harms of medical radiation have often been overblown, scaring patients away from necessary scans. It's time to start talking about the benefits, according to the opening talk by Dr. U. Joseph Schoepf at the International Symposium on Multidetector-Row CT.
Talking to your patients: A manifesto on image sharing
June 17, 2013 -- The era of patient interaction is coming, but are radiologists prepared? Dr. Sam Friedman, also known as the Dalai Lama of PACS, isn't so sure. Read some of his insights on why and how radiologists need to start sharing images.
Paging system accelerates clinician access to medical images
June 17, 2013 -- Knowledge is power, or least it was recently at an Australian hospital: Researchers there found that paging referring physicians to tell them their images were available in the PACS dramatically decreased the time between when studies were ready and when they were viewed.
Postmortem CT, 3D touchscreen table aid virtual autopsy
June 14, 2013 -- Postmortem CT can be an invaluable autopsy planning tool. With the help of a life-sized, 3D-enabled touchscreen table, pathologists can also view and manipulate images in 3D modes to locate pathology, perform virtual dissections, and decide on the best autopsy approach.
JACR: Proposed Medicare cuts threaten radiology training
June 14, 2013 -- Just as healthcare reform is increasing the need for new skills to be incorporated into graduate medical education curricula, Medicare budget cuts threaten to undercut the federal support that covers most of the cost of medical residencies, according to a new article in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.
CR, DR breast cancer screening performance comparable
June 14, 2013 -- Radiologists reading breast screening studies had comparable performance regardless of whether the images were acquired with computed radiography (CR) or digital radiography (DR) mammography systems, according to a Belgian study published online in European Radiology. Still, DR delivered a lower radiation dose than CR.
Mary's Musings: Why the world of radiology still belongs to men
June 13, 2013 -- Some recent articles have suggested the existence of a gender gap in pay for radiologists. In my experience, I've never made as much as my male colleagues -- and that's OK with me. Why? Let me tell you a story of not so long ago.
Tips for avoiding reading-room 'radi-holidays'
June 13, 2013 -- It can be difficult to design curricula for medical students who pick radiology reading rooms as an elective. The passive nature and poor structure of many reading-room programs have earned some the nickname "radi-holidays," but that doesn't have to be the case, according to a new article in the Journal of the American College of Radiology.
CMS bends on oncology PET coverage, will pay for 3 scans
June 12, 2013 -- In a victory for PET proponents, the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on Tuesday issued a final decision on coverage of oncology FDG-PET scans, agreeing to pay for three follow-up studies rather than just one, as it had proposed three months ago.
Novel research at SNMMI shows molecular imaging's breadth
June 12, 2013 -- VANCOUVER - Radiopharmaceuticals unlocking secrets of the brain, the potential of PET and MRI in breast imaging, and determining the appropriate radiation dose for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients are the focus of influential papers at this week's Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) meeting.
SNMMI: Exercise FDG-PET tops stress MPI in detecting ischemia
June 12, 2013 -- VANCOUVER - Exercise FDG-PET imaging significantly outperformed SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in detecting ischemia in patients with single-vessel disease, according to a study presented on Tuesday at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) annual meeting.
