ASRT: RT salaries lag inflation

Salary growth for radiologic technologists in the U.S. has lagged behind the inflation rate for the past three years, according to a new study released this week by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) of Albuquerque, NM.

The ASRT's survey indicated that the average salary for RTs in the U.S. is $61,733 per year, representing growth of 5.2% over the past three years. The U.S. inflation rate, however, has averaged 6.51% over the same period.

A number of factors may have contributed to the slow rate of wage growth, including a sluggish national economy, changes within healthcare, and the equalization of supply and demand for medical imaging personnel, according to Myke Kudlas, ASRT vice president of education and research.

RT salaries by clinical subspecialty
RT specialty Average salary % increase, 2007-2010
Nuclear medicine $70,822 2.5%
MRI $65,098 5.1%
Interventional cardiology $64,614 5.4%
CT $60,586 4.6%
Radiography $53,953 3.1%

On a state-by-state basis, RTs from California had the highest average salaries, at $82,753, followed by technologists in Massachusetts at $76,840. Alabama technologists had the lowest average salaries, at $49,531, with RTs in North Dakota receiving the second lowest at $51,930.
