Varian Medical taps Australian hospital

Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems of Palo Alto, CA, has appointed an Australian hospital as a teaching facility for its image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) technology.

The radiation oncology department at Northern Sydney Cancer Center at Royal North Shore Hospital will hold four IGRT courses in 2010, according to Varian, which plans to extend the accreditation to other techniques such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and the company's RapidArc technology.

Royal North Shore Hospital has been teaching these techniques to clinicians from other hospitals on an unofficial basis since 2007; with this formal agreement, it will provide more instruction to other radiotherapy departments across New South Wales and the rest of Australia, Varian said.
