AMIC, MU partner on Mo-99 device

Medical isotope producer Advanced Medical Isotope (AMIC) of Kennewick, WA, has joined with the University of Missouri (MU) to test and develop prototype compact devices to produce radioisotopes, which would supply molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) within a few years.

MU holds the intellectual property rights for a system that generates neutrons from a tank filled with heavy water and fissile uranium material. Current models indicate that at least 500 curies of Mo-99 would be available from such a system after one week of operation, with the potential to produce greater quantities.

AMIC noted that more research and development is needed to confirm that potential.

The company currently is negotiating with an industrial partner that could create the compact device within two to four years.
