A steep rise in cardiovascular disease and mortalities in Europe has created enhanced scope for the purchase of cardiac catheterization imaging systems, according to a report by healthcare analysts Frost & Sullivan (F&S).
In addition to an uptake in cardiac cath imaging applications, as European healthcare entities revamp existing facilities, they are likely to replace analog image intensifier devices with flat-panel digital equipment, the firm said.
According to the analysts, a growing focus on efficient and noninvasive techniques of diagnostic cardiology such as CT angiography (CTA) and MR angiography (MRA) has also resulted in the augmented use of digital imaging in catheterization procedures.
F&S said that it anticipates that revenues in this European market segment will reach $196.6 million (U.S.) by 2009 from an estimated $144.1 million in 2004. They further held that the single-plane cardiovascular imaging systems segment will dominate the overall market, with biplane systems also likely to boost revenues.
Although the firm stated that it believes digital flat-panel cardiac cath systems will see greater adoption in Europe, it said that vendors will have to provide price justifications for such equipment to prevent healthcare institutions from opting for refurbished devices.
