GE Healthcare sister unit GE Global Research has received a four-year $3.27 million award from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop a smaller and cryogen-free MRI magnet.
The Niskayuna, NY-based GE unit said the technology could reduce system costs and make siting easier in underserved areas. If the proposed magnet technologies are developed, MRI systems using the technology could have cost and siting requirements similar to today's low-cost, permanent magnet systems, but with a higher field strength and image quality comparable to existing premium superconducting systems, GE said.
