NRG schedules Petten reactor repairs
By AuntMinnie.com staff writers
December 15, 2009

Dutch radiopharmaceutical producer Nuclear Research and Consultancy Group (NRG) will begin repairs to the primary cooling water pipework of its High Flux Reactor on February 19, 2010.

Work on the reactor in Petten, Netherlands, is expected to keep the facility, a major source of medical isotopes, offline until the second half of August 2010.

Hazelwood, MO-based Mallinckrodt, a subsidiary of Covidien of Dublin, Ireland, is a joint venture partner with NRG at Petten. Mallinckrodt provides approximately 40% of the U.S. medical isotope supply.

Repairs include removal of concrete around the pipe to facilitate the installation of new material, which will be welded onto the existing system. Before recasting the pipe in concrete, the system will undergo an extensive inspection and testing procedure.
