Eastman Kodak Health Imaging has released its new DirectView Web image distribution system. Designed to provide both Web-based image distribution and teleradiology functionality, DirectView Web will serve as the foundation for the vendor's upcoming PACS System 5 platform. PACS System 5 was announced at the 2002 RSNA meeting in Chicago and is scheduled for release later this year, according to the Rochester, NY-based vendor.
Employing the same database as PACS System 5, the Web distribution system allows for physicians to view imaging studies from their homes and offices as well as from computers located throughout hospital campuses, Kodak said. Physicians can perform clinical review on dual-monitor, high-resolution workstations, and the system is available on both Macintosh and PC platforms using an Internet Explorer or Netscape browser.
Other features include support for both lossless and lossy (wavelet) compression, and conversion from lossy to lossless compression with a single mouse click. The software also can deliver variable lossy compression rates based on the anatomy present in each image being downloaded, and can progressively download imaging studies in layers of increasing resolution, Kodak said.
