Philips launches iU22 as flagship ultrasound scanner

Philips Medical Systems has introduced iU22, a premium ultrasound scanner offering features such as real-time 4-D imaging, voice-activated control and annotation, and automated image optimization technologies, according to the Andover, MA-based vendor. The system will serve as Philips’ flagship ultrasound scanner for general imaging applications.

iU22 offers integrated 2-D, 3-D, and real-time 4-D imaging, as well as multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) resolution rivaling acquired 2-D plane resolution, Philips said. The vendor is also highlighting the unit’s ergonomic benefits, including a fully articulating control panel, lighter transducer cables, and angled, easy-access transducer connectors.

It comes with a flat-screen liquid crystal display (LCD), and a new line of Explora transducers that are lighter, more ergonomic, and offer ultra-high frequencies up to 17 MHz, Philips said. The system’s architecture processes multiple data streams in real time, and includes the firm’s SonoCT with XRES technology.

In addition, Philips’ xStream architecture enables quick acquisition, manipulation, and quantification of full-volume datasets, according to the vendor. Other capabilities include hands-free voice command, one-button automated optimization controls for quick and consistent image acquisition between users of varying skill levels, and data management functions for handling patient information, reporting, and trending.

The company will unveil the scanner at next month’s European Congress of Radiology in Vienna.
