The University of Florida (UF) Health Proton Therapy Institute has completed a $44 million expansion and upgrade project that it began in 2016.

The institute recently completed the installation of a dedicated nozzle in an original gantry that delivers pencil-beam scanning to cancer patients. The reopening of this fifth treatment room was the third and final phase of the project.

Other phases of the project included installation of new proton therapy imaging system and new treatment planning software, a 10,000 square-foot expansion, with some of the initial funding provided by the Florida Legislature, the institute noted.
